Axomera therapy

The fourth level of conservative medicine.

Medication, injections, physical therapy — conservative medicine knows three ways to deal with chronic pain. Axomera adds a fourth: the weak electrical fields with which the body controls inflammation and healing itself. Here you can see how treatment is performed, what it is based on — and how you can contribute to it yourself.

01 · The treatment

Four steps. No cuts.

A session lasts about half an hour. Precision is crucial.

Session duration
approx. 30 mins.
Number of sessions
usually 4–6
Interval
3–7 days
Tolerability
generally low-pain
  1. 01

    Localise pain

The pain-relevant structure is sought out specifically — including with a pressure probe and ultrasound-guided imaging.

  2. 02

    Place probes

Fine, acupuncture-like probes are placed with millimetre precision at the diseased tissue.

  3. 03

    Stimulate

Around 30 minutes of gentle, individually adjusted stimulation — usually only perceptible as a fine tingling.

  4. 04

    Afterwards

After the session, you can generally get up immediately and continue your everyday life.

Is the treatment painful?

Generally not. Axomera works with very fine probes and undulating direct current below the pain threshold (in the microampere range); many patients find the session relaxing.

Side effects?

The therapy is generally well-tolerated. A slight feeling of warmth or a temporary skin reddening at the treatment site may occur.

Can I drive or work afterwards?

Generally yes — usually no downtime is to be expected, you are immediately fit for transport and everyday life. Please discuss sports or heavy physical activity on the day of treatment with the practice. After headache therapy, temporary tiredness may occur.

Combinable?

Yes — with acupuncture, physiotherapy, manual therapy, and physical therapy; injections are possible, provided they do not involve cortisone.

Costs?

Purely self-paid service (IGeL). Private health insurance and supplementary insurance often reimburse the therapy in whole or in part; before starting, you will receive transparent information about the anticipated effort. Details can be found on the page Costs and reimbursement.

02 · How it works

What the axolotl can do, Axomera translates into medicine.

If an axolotl loses a leg, it grows back — bone, nerve, muscle, each in its place. This order follows not only genes but also electrical signals that tell the tissue where to grow. Bioelectric control is a fundamental principle of living organisms. Axomera translates this precisely into treatment.

The name Axomera is reminiscent of the Axolotl — the animal whose self-healing showed us the way.

Pinpoint

Specific, very weak electrical fields at the diseased tissue.

Inflammation

Is specifically modulated — not blocked, not heated.

Regeneration

Cellular repair processes are initiated.

Simply explained

One level deeper than the pain signal.

The principle

Exactly where the control is disrupted.

Our cells regulate inflammation and healing via electrical potentials. In chronic conditions, this signal flow becomes disrupted. Axomera generates weak electrical fields at exactly this location to support the body's own processes — inflammation is modulated, and regeneration is initiated.

Distinction

No block. No heat.

Axomera does not interrupt the pain signal like a TENS device and does not cauterise anything with heat. It works one level deeper — on the biological information itself.

Classification · Medical device

Active medical device, administered by a physician.

Axomera is an active medical device (CE, Class IIa, MDR 2017/745) and is used exclusively by trained physicians — non-invasive, generally with little pain, and without surgical intervention.

Prof. Dr. Albrecht Molsberger
This is the reason why we speak of a separate level. Axomera does not treat the symptom or the pain signal, but the electrical control of inflammation and regeneration. For conservative medicine, this opens up a new dimension which, though long known, can finally now be utilised.
— Prof. Dr. med. Albrecht Molsberger, developer of the Axomera therapy
Scientific basis

Two principles of action, scientifically substantiated.

Action level 01

Inflammation: modulated, not numbed.

Inflamed tissue is acidic, and this acidity drives the pain. That weak electrical fields influence such signal processes is well described in basic research. Axomera purposefully utilises this connection at the site of treatment.

  • Inflamed tissue is acidic (low pH).
  • Protons activate nociceptive signalling pathways.
  • Axomera is intended to modulate intercellular signal transmission and contribute to pH normalisation.
  • The inflammatory reaction can consequently subside.
Action level 02

Healing follows the voltage gradient.

Repair cells migrate along the body's own voltage gradients — a process described as galvanotaxis well-documented in basic science. Axomera applies this principle clinically.

  • Cells possess a membrane potential.
  • Voltage gradients control cell migration.
  • Injured tissue generates its own voltage gradients.
  • Axomera applies these mechanisms clinically.

03 · Your contribution

No one knows your pain as precisely as you do.

Many patients ask about exercises, diet or food supplements. That may benefit your general health — however, the most valuable contribution to Axomera therapy is different: the precise observation of your pain.

Axomera works by placing fine probes precisely at the pain-triggering structure. The more precisely this point is known, the more targeted the treatment can be — and no one knows your pain as well as you do yourself.

Normally, we suppress pain, distract ourselves, and forget it as quickly as possible. To prepare for your treatment, the opposite applies: Consciously seek out the pain.

Imagine a stone in your shoe or a splinter in your skin — a small, precisely localisable point from which the pain originates. This is the exact local pain generator we want to find together.

What to look for
  • Locationthe exact spot
  • Qualitystabbing, burning, dull, throbbing
  • Depthsuperficial or deep
  • Radiationwhere the pain travels
  • Triggerwhich movement or load
Prepare at home

Target the pain before your appointment by performing the movement that triggers it, and mark it on a body sketch. Bring the sketch with you.

Shortly before the session

If possible, take no painkillers — this is the only way the area remains precisely localisable. However, never discontinue long-term medication on your own — discuss this with the practice beforehand. Cortisone should be avoided shortly before and after treatment (please discuss in advance).

This preparatory work makes the treatment more precise. You are the expert on your own pain.
