Migraine — pain distribution (frontotemporal & cervicogenic)
Migraine

When migraine dictates everyday life.

Some days begin with the certainty that this day does not belong to you. Migraine takes not only the head — it takes the hours. As a reference centre for Axomera therapy, we treat in accordance with guidelines and, with Axomera, offer a bioelectric path for all those who strive for fewer attacks without long-term medication.

Why patients come to us

We know your path.

Many of our patients have years behind them of misdiagnoses, frequent changes of doctor, and increasing medication intake - often to the limits of what is bearable.

We check your history carefully before we propose Axomera therapy, for which our patients travel from the entire DACH region and internationally.

Clinical picture and differentiation

Migraine or migraine-like headache?

Much of what acts "like a migraine" is not. The migraine-like headache is significantly more common in practice than classic migraine — and differs in therapy and prognosis. This differentiation is central to the prognosis under Axomera.

AClassic migraine · rarer

Sudden onset — usually with aura.

Onset
Fast: within minutes — often with an aura and light sensations in the affected eye.
Spread
Unilateral, throbbing — typically in the area of the forehead, temple, and eye.
Accompaniments
Nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound — pronounced need for rest.
Medications
Usually fast response to triptans.

Prognosis under Axomera: tends to require more treatments, often in combination with acupuncture.

BMigraine-like headache · more frequent

Slow onset — originating from the neck.

Onset
Slow to start, increasing over hours — no aura.
Spread
Usually begins in the neck, pulls over the back of the head towards the front to the forehead and eye — often throbbing.
Accompaniments
Nausea, dizziness — also a clear need for rest.
Frequency
Significantly more frequent than classic migraine — but often misdiagnosed as migraine.

Prognosis under Axomera: usually fewer treatment sessions needed.

Progression

Episodic vs. chronic.

Episodic means about 1–6 attacks per month. Having more than 15 headache days per month for at least three months is referred to as chronic migraine.

Guidelines

Migraine — what is possible with medication

Non-drug prophylaxis

Acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis

Acupuncture is well evidenced as migraine prophylaxis by several large studies — the evidence base is more robust than for most medication studies. The multicenter study by Diener, Molsberger, Böwing et al. (2006) compared verum acupuncture, sham acupuncture, and standard medication: all three procedures were effective, with similar success rates. A current Cochrane review (2025) confirms acupuncture as an established prevention option.

Duration
10–15 sessions over several weeks.
Side effects
Minimal to none.
Response
60–70% significant improvement; 20–30% non-responders.
Advantage
Better long-term tolerability than most medications.

Combinable with Axomera: Acupuncture (longer-term prophylaxis) and Axomera (acute episodes, rapid regeneration) complement each other well.

Modulation of electric fields

Inflammation has an electrical dimension.

Axomera (percutaneous bioelectric current stimulation, PBCS) generates controlled static electric fields in the treatment area within the range of naturally occurring potentials — addressing the "electrical dimension" of inflammation and pain.

For patients, the treatment feels similar to acupuncture — technically it is different: fine probes are placed precisely at the affected tissue and supplied with a patient-specific, physiological electrical signal by a microprocessor. This neurophysiological hypothesis is empirically supported by many patient histories (real-world data), not by controlled studies; as with other indications, around 20–30% of those treated do not respond.

Where we make the difference

We master standard therapy. You come for more.

Standard · Guideline

Guideline-based migraine therapy, routine.

We know the established acute and prophylactic therapies from daily practice and advise on them openly — from triptans to beta-blockers to botulinum toxin.

Focus · Axomera

Fewer medications — goal sustained remission.

Many patients come to us because they see no perspective in lifelong drug therapy. They strive for a significant reduction in migraine attacks — and this with fewer or no medications.

Our goal is sustained remission of migraine over years.

Our approach

How we proceed with you.

Every therapy needs its own examination — for us, this includes the Axomera diagnostics and the Axomera therapy.

Axomera diagnostics
  1. Secure the diagnosis and check the influence of taken medication
  2. Millimeter-precise examination — classification as migraine or migraine-like headache and localization of pain points
Axomera therapy
  1. 4–6 Axomera treatments, targeted at these points
  2. Goal: significant reduction in attack frequency and intensity
  3. In favorable courses: sustained remission with fewer or no medications at all

Aims & course of treatment. We cannot guarantee a specific result — the progression is individual. Depending on the course of the condition, fewer or more treatments may be required.

Patient · male · 50 years
Episodic migraine · starting at age 30
„At 15, the headaches started — first occasionally, then more frequently. From 30, this turned into a migraine, three to five attacks a month. In the middle of an attack, I had my first Axomera treatment, with stimulation points in the upper neck area and at the temple. After about 30 minutes, the pain subsided; after an hour, it was gone. The next attack did not come until two months later — we performed the same treatment again, with the same result. Since then, ten years later, I have been migraine-free.“
