Morton's neuralgia

The toe burns. The forefoot hurts. With every step.

As a reference centre for Axomera therapy, we pinpoint the irritated nerve between the metatarsal heads and treat the inflammation with Axomera stimulation.

Clinical picture

Nerve irritation between the metatarsal heads.

The Morton's neuralgia is a painful irritation of a nerve between the metatarsal heads, usually in the third or fourth toe interspace.

Burning, shooting forefoot pain when walking are typical, often with the feeling of standing on a stone or a crease, often accompanied by a tingling in the toes.

Patients

What patients report.

Typical findings

From our patient consultations and the medical reports submitted.

  • Symptoms usually lasting for several months
  • Burning, stabbing forefoot pain when walking
  • "Stone-in-the-shoe" feeling, tingling or numbness in the toes
  • Intensification in tight shoes
  • Triggers: overloading, incorrect loading due to inappropriate footwear.
Previous therapy

Almost always in this order.

  1. Consulted several doctors; MRI with arguably visible swelling of the toe nerve
  2. Wide shoes, shoe advice
  3. Metatarsal pads / cushions
  4. Painkillers (NSAIDs)
  5. cortisone injection
  6. Surgery (neuroma removal)
Where we make the difference

Shoe adjustments and cortisone injections often only alleviate symptoms temporarily, and surgical removal of the nerve can leave permanent numbness in the toe.

Axomera for Morton's neuralgia.

In Morton's neuralgia, the connective tissue around a toe nerve thickens between the metatarsal bones and irritates it further with every step — a self-sustaining hyperexcitability. The affected nerve lies between the metatarsal heads just under the sole of the foot and is targetably reachable from the outside.

Axomera targets this nerve region: computer-controlled electrical signals in the dimension of cellular electrical fields are placed with millimetre precision between the affected metatarsal heads. The goal is to reduce the hyperexcitability of the nerve and reduce the swelling of the surrounding tissue.

How Axomera therapy works →
Our approach

How we proceed with you.

Every medical therapy requires its own diagnostics. With us, that is the Axomera diagnostics as the basis for a successful Axomera therapy.

Axomera diagnostics
  1. Secure the diagnosis and check the influence of taken medication
  2. Millimetre-precise examination — localising pain points at the irritated nerve between the metatarsal heads
Axomera therapy
  1. 4–6 Axomera treatments, targeted at these points
  2. Goal: significant reduction of pain and inflammation of the nerve.
  3. In favourable cases: healing nerve regeneration with pain-free walking in everyday life and normal resilience of the foot.

Aims & course of treatment. We cannot guarantee a specific result — the progression is individual. Depending on the course of the condition, fewer or more treatments may be required.

Axomera targets the affected nerve region in the forefoot bioelectrically — on a different level than insoles, cortisone, and surgery; in doing so, we assume that any swelling of the nerve is a result of the inflammation, not vice versa.
